Burning Smell From an Outlet: What To Do Right Now

Short answer
Shut that circuit off at the panel now. A burning, hot-plastic or fishy smell from an outlet means conductor insulation is overheating, and the smell arrives before there is anything to see. If you cannot identify the circuit, shut off the main.
Do this first
- Switch off the breaker for that circuit. If you cannot identify it with confidence, switch off the main.
- Do not unplug anything from the outlet. Breaking or making a connection on a hot, faulted circuit can arc. De-energize first, then unplug.
- Do not open the outlet or the panel to investigate.
- If the smell is at the panel itself, shut off the main from outside if your service allows it, and leave the cover alone entirely.
- If you see smoke or scorching, or the smell is strong and spreading, leave and call 911 first. Electrical fires inside a wall can be well established before anything is visible in the room.
Then call an electrician. This is a same-day problem regardless of the hour.
Why the smell means what it means
That distinctive hot-plastic or fishy odour is thermoset insulation breaking down. It is the smell of a connection that has gone resistive and is now converting electrical energy into heat at a point that was never designed to get hot.
The important part: the smell reliably precedes the visible evidence. By the time there is scorching on a faceplate, the connection behind it has been running hot for a long time. That is why "I will look at it this weekend" is the wrong response, and why we treat it as a dispatch-now call rather than a booking.
The three causes we find most often here
A failed back-stab connection. Push-in terminals on the back of a receptacle hold the conductor with a small spring clip. Decades of thermal cycling relax that clip. Resistance climbs, the joint heats. This is the single most common cause and it is why we replace rather than re-stab.
A loose aluminum termination. In homes wired between roughly 1965 and 1975, aluminum branch circuits fail at the screw terminals. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, so every heating and cooling cycle works the connection slightly looser. Very common in Metairie, Kenner and the postwar Westbank subdivisions.
An overloaded or undersized circuit. Frequently a window unit or space heater on a general lighting circuit, or a receptacle carrying a load through a daisy chain of extensions.
A fourth, particular to this climate: corroded terminations in damp attics and under-house spaces, especially where salt air reaches them. Corroded is resistive, and resistive is hot.
What not to do
Do not simply stop using that outlet and leave the circuit energized. The fault is at a connection, not at the plug, and the connection stays hot whenever anything downstream on that circuit draws current.
Do not reset a breaker that has tripped alongside the smell. It tripped for a reason.
Do not spray anything into the outlet.
What happens on our visit
We de-energize and verify dead, then open the device and the boxes upstream. We thermal-check under load once it is safe to re-energize, because the visible part of a box usually looks fine and the heat tells you where the fault is. We give you the cause in writing before repairing.
Most single-device faults are repaired the same visit. Where the smell traces back to aluminum branch wiring or deteriorated conductor, the conversation becomes a larger one about remediation, and we will scope it honestly rather than fixing one outlet and leaving the other forty.

No. The smell stops when the circuit stops drawing current through the faulty connection, not when the fault is fixed. It returns the next time that circuit is loaded, and each cycle degrades the connection further.
It smells like fish. Is that the same thing?
Yes, and it is a well-known signature. Certain outlet and switch plastics give off a distinctly fishy odour as they overheat. Treat it exactly the same as a burning smell.
Can I use the rest of the house?
