What working in Gretna is actually like
Gretna has the oldest continuously occupied housing of any city we cover outside Orleans Parish, and the historic district shows it. The streets around Huey P. Long Avenue and Lafayette carry frame houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s, which puts them squarely in the knob-and-tube window. That system was standard from roughly the 1880s to the 1940s and its weakness is not the ceramic hardware but the rubber-and-cloth conductor insulation, which embrittles with age and does so faster in heat and humidity. It also has no equipment grounding conductor at all, which is why every original outlet in these houses is two-prong.
Because Gretna's older housing is largely raised frame rather than slab, rewiring here is frequently easier and cheaper than the same job in Metairie or Harvey. A walkable under-house and an accessible attic mean most runs drop or rise inside the wall cavity and the only openings are at device boxes that were being replaced anyway. Plaster medallions, picture rails and original millwork generally survive a rewire untouched, which matters in a district where that trim is a large part of what the house is worth.
The Westbank changes the storm picture as well. Gretna sits behind its own levee system and on a different set of Entergy feeders from the East Bank, and in several recent events restoration timelines on the two sides of the river diverged noticeably. That is worth knowing when you weigh standby power: your outage experience is not your Uptown friend's outage experience. Access is a factor for us too.
