EV charger installation in New Orleans comes down to two questions, and both should be answered before you buy hardware: does your panel have the capacity and the physical slots for a 240-volt circuit, and how far is the charger location from that panel. What we do on the first visit
Every ev charger installation job starts the same way: we look before we quote. You get the cause in writing, a price that does not move once work begins, and the permit filed by us rather than by you.
- Check the panel first. Capacity, open slots and existing load. This decides whether you are buying a $1,200 job or a $4,000 one.
- Pick the shortest honest route. Charger position is the biggest cost lever. Same wall as the panel is dramatically cheaper than the far wall.
- Install on a dedicated circuit. Sized at 125% of continuous load, with the disconnect and GFCI protection code requires.
- Commission at full current. We charge the car at full rated amperage and check the termination temperatures before we leave.
The panel question decides your price
A 48-amp Level 2 charger is a continuous load, which under NEC 625 means the circuit is sized at 125 percent of it, so a 60-amp breaker and conductor to match. Three things can happen when you ask a panel for that.
If you have a 200-amp service with spare capacity and two open slots, nothing extra is needed and you are at the bottom of the range. If you have capacity but no free slots, a subpanel solves it at $400 to $2,000. If the load calculation says the service itself cannot carry it, which is common on the 100-amp panels still on plenty of houses here, you are looking at a service upgrade at $2,000 to $4,500 before the charger work starts.
This is worth checking before you order a charger, not after. Open your panel door and look for the main breaker rating and how many slots are free. Distance, and the New Orleans lot problem
After panel capacity, wire run length is the dominant cost. Budget roughly $5 to $15 per additional linear foot. A charger mounted on the same wall as the panel might need ten feet of conductor; one at the back of a deep lot might need eighty, in conduit, in a trench.
Housing here makes that worse than average. The classic New Orleans lot is narrow and deep, parking is frequently at the rear off an alley or in a detached garage at the back of the property, and the panel is at the front or on the side near the meter. That is close to the worst-case geometry, and it is why quotes for the same charger vary so widely across the city. A detached structure with an underground run and a subpanel at the far end is a genuinely different job from a garage install.
Two practical savings. Mount the charger on the wall nearest the house rather than at the nose of the parking space; most units ship with a 25-foot cable and it will reach. And if you are considering a second charger later, running conduit large enough for both now costs very little more than running it once.
