## Do this first

1. **Switch off the breaker for that circuit.** If you cannot identify it with

## Why the smell means what it means

**A loose aluminum termination.** In homes wired between roughly 1965 and
1975, aluminum branch circuits fail at the screw terminals. Aluminum expands
and contracts more than copper, so every heating and cooling cycle works the

Westbank subdivisions.

**An overloaded or undersized circuit.** Frequently a window unit or space
heater on a general lighting circuit, or a receptacle carrying a load through a
daisy chain of extensions.

A fourth, particular to this climate: **corroded terminations** in damp attics
and under-house spaces, especially where salt air reaches them. Corroded is
resistive, and resistive is hot.

## What not to do

Do not simply stop using that outlet and leave the circuit energized. The fault
is at a connection, not at the plug, and the connection stays hot whenever
anything downstream on that circuit draws current.

Do not reset a breaker that has tripped alongside the smell. It tripped for a
reason.

Do not spray anything into the outlet.
